South Korea Sees Record Online Sales
Total online retail transactions climbed 10.0 percent year-on-year, reaching 24.13 trillion won — approximately $16.0 billion — last month, the strongest April performance since authorities began tracking the data in 2017.
The standout driver was automotive: internet-based sales of vehicles and related accessories exploded 154.8 percent, fueled largely by surging consumer demand for models produced by American electric vehicle giant Tesla.
Double-digit growth was also recorded across several other categories, including mobile devices, cosmetics, and fashion goods. Meanwhile, food and beverage, meal delivery, daily household goods, clothing, travel services, home appliances, and consumer electronics each posted more modest single-digit gains.
Digital gift vouchers emerged as another bright spot, with e-coupon transactions rising 19.6 percent as more consumers embraced the convenience of sending gifts — particularly coffee and baked goods — through online coupon platforms.
Mobile commerce continued to dominate the broader landscape. Purchases made via smartphones, tablets, and other handheld devices rose 8.6 percent annually to 18.44 trillion won — roughly $12.2 billion — representing 76.4 percent of all online spending recorded in April.
